Courtesy of Nicole Dolson Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through the Power of Reading This year, Guion Creek Middle School and Guion Creek Elementary School teamed up once again to celebrate the incredible legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the countless Black Americans who have shaped our country. Our GCMS students took the lead, selecting meaningful books to read to younger classes, sparking thoughtful discussions, and creating space for powerful questions and personal connections. Principal McKinney shared, "This tradition is more than just a moment—it's a movement of learning, reflection, and unity." Courtesy of Lloyd McKinney Excellence in Action The state officially certified graduation rates for the Class of 2024. Our Pike High School Class of 2024 had a 95.5% non-waiver graduation rate, with 696 students receiving diplomas. They earned 7,432 college credits, 302 career and technical certifications, and $14.1 million in scholarships and academic awards. Above & Beyond Awards The Board had the privilege of honoring four of our incredible educators with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award at their recent meeting. Deer Run Elementary School Principal Raimeka Graham recognized Aigner Hart with her school's Above & Beyond Award. Mrs. Graham shared, "This school year brought exciting growth to our kindergarten team, expanding to five sections, including two new teachers and one team member on maternity leave. During this transition, Ms. Aigner Hart went Above and Beyond, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication. She led grade-level meetings, created a comprehensive Canvas course to support the substitute in our added kindergarten class, and provided invaluable assistance to students who needed extra support in another class while their teacher was out. For yet another teacher, she ensures a student receives their sensory break and thoughtfully prepares materials for the team. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Hart showcases her commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for both students and colleagues. Thank you, Ms. Hart, for your hard work, compassion, and leadership. You truly make a difference." Mrs. Jennifer Culhan, who serves as the Director of our Exceptional Learners Department, recognized Molly Kelly and Modupe Ositelu for consistently going above and beyond. She stated, "I want to share two brief stories that highlight their extraordinary contributions. Last year, one of our schools received a call from a parent preparing to enroll her son. We learned he had a serious medical condition that limited his mobility, and the full extent of this became clear during their school visit. Our physical therapist, Molly Kelly, immediately stepped up, navigating a complex process involving Riley Hospital, countless after-hours efforts, and extensive collaboration with the family and school staff. Thanks to Mrs. Kelly’s tireless work, this student is not only attending his neighborhood school but he is thriving! The second story features Modupe Ositelu. Ms. Ositelu firmly believes that in order for mobility to be maintained, students have to be moving. Sounds like a simple concept, however, this can present a challenge at times with some of our students. Modupe encourages the students in a way that they often don’t even realize that she has gotten them to move, making it fun and engaging. Additionally, you will regularly find Ms. Ositelu taking time to work with staff to ensure that they fully understand how to integrate mobility into a student’s regular school day. It truly is awe-inspiring to watch both of these ladies in action! Molly and Modupe, your dedication, compassion, and willingness to go the extra mile make a profound difference in the lives of our students and families. You exemplify the true meaning of the Superintendent’s Above & Beyond Award. Please join me in congratulating both Molly Kelly and Modupe Ositelu on this well-deserved recognition." Lincoln Middle School's Principal, Dr. Monte Tapplar, recognized 6th grade Social Studies Teacher Alana Waldrip as his school's Above & Beyond Award recipient. Dr. Tapplar shared, "Ms. Waldrip is a solid educational leader within our school building. She currently serves as one of our grade-level leaders and lead facilitator of our school Equity Council. Ms. Waldrip possesses 3 special attributes that complement her leadership, character, and commitment to excellence at Lincoln Middle School. Ms. Waldrip is consistent. This attribute is reflected in her strong work ethic. She is visible in our building, and she fully engages our students in and outside the classroom setting. Upon entering her classroom, she is always prepared to help kids learn. Even when she is away from the building, she is always prepared to help kids learn. Her students are aware of what they are learning, and they are often exposed to exercises designed to increase engagement. Regardless of the day or situation, she is a reliable resource; and she demonstrates high levels of engagement. She can work through challenging situations while maintaining poise and optimism. Ms. Waldrip is emotionally intelligent. She can read her classroom and staff when presenting information. As a result, she can carry courageous conversations when creating an awareness of equitable instructional practices and social justice. Students grow and connect with her instruction. She builds positive relationships with her clients and makes content relatable and of high interest. She captures students’ strengths and needs due to her desire to genuinely know them and mold them for success. She is a true asset to the overall growth of our students! Ms. Waldrip is dedicated. She is unwavering in her commitment to the work accomplished at Lincoln Middle School. She develops innovative lessons and creates time to support our learners’ unique needs. She pushes herself, at times going beyond the curriculum to engage students. She seeks ways to refine her craft as a professional in the field. She also demonstrates her commitment to education by serving as a model for her peers regarding instructional delivery and leadership. Consistency, emotional intelligence, and dedication are attributes reflected in Ms. Waldrip’s work performance. This award is a testament to the countless lives she has touched and the difference she makes every day. We are blessed to have Ms. Waldrip as a member of our team at Lincoln Middle School!" Courtesy of NAN Athletics Last week at Snacks Crossing Elementary School, some of our fifth graders read about how maple syrup is made. Afterward, they had the opportunity to tap some maple trees on the property. The students had to measure the trees to make sure that they were mature enough to tap. They then drilled a small hole into the tree and gently tapped a spout into the tree. Over the next few weeks, they will have to go out and check the buckets to see how much sap has been collected. When the sap comes out of the tree, it is between 95-99 percent water and only 1-5 percent sugar. Mr. Church is going to take the sap home, put it in a pan over a fire, and boil off all of the extra water. To make maple syrup, the sap must be boiled for several hours until enough water evaporates. On average, it takes 40 gallons of sap to produce just one gallon of syrup. Superintendent's Above & Beyond Awards Prior to winter break, the Board had the privilege of recognizing Elisabeth Benedict, Kristin Dahmer, and Lu Hesler with the Superintendent's Above & Beyond Award. Raykisha Blanden, who serves as the coordinator of our Nathaniel Jones Early Learning Center, recognized Elizabeth Benedict. She shared, "Ms. Benedict is a teacher who embodies what it means to be an educator and a true team player. Her ability to work alongside her colleagues, offering support, encouragement, and a helping hand whenever needed, makes her a gem on our team. She is always willing to lend her expertise, share her ideas, and collaborate on new initiatives, making those around her better in the process. Whether it's in team meetings, planning sessions, or simply offering a kind word, Ms. Benedict is there—patient, thoughtful, and ready to contribute. Her compassion for her students is truly inspiring. Elisabeth doesn’t just teach her students; she nurtures them. She creates an environment where they feel safe, valued, and encouraged to grow academically and as individuals. Her gentle spirit and unwavering patience ensure that each student feels seen and heard, no matter where they are in their learning journey. Without being asked she has taken on the role of team lead and has consistently shown incredible leadership, guiding her colleagues with wisdom and a smile of excellence. She sets a high standard for what it means to be a supportive and effective leader. And when the workload gets heavy or a challenge arises, she’s the first to step in, go the extra mile, and make sure no one is left behind. We are truly lucky to have Elisabeth as part of our team. Her dedication, her kindness, and her relentless commitment to her students and colleagues make her someone we can all be proud of." Eagle Creek Elementary School Principal, Pamela Guevara, recognized Kristin Dahmer. She shared, "Our recipient has been at ECES for four years now...She came to us with a plethora of experience...our recipient stood tall as the sole resource teacher, ensuring that every child received the support, encouragement, and tools they needed to thrive. This year, we added two lifeskills classrooms at ECES, increasing our staff by 2 teachers and 6 instructional assistants. This programming was new for us and we had a learning curve. Ms. Dahmer was vital in assisting to decrease that learning curve. She took the new staff under her wings and loaned her instructional assistants to those two classrooms for several months...She took the initiative to host trainings for our new staff members and meet with the teachers to support them in writing IEPs and scheduling and holding case conferences, all while supporting her students. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Dahmer has also been a mentor and an anchor for colleagues, always ready to lend a hand, share expertise, or simply listen, graciously and with a welcoming attitude and spirit." Principal Tina Foster recognized Lu Hesler as her school's Above & Beyond recipient. Mrs. Foster shared, "During the absence of our Media Specialist, Mrs. Hesler, our Media Assistant at New Augusta South, has been a beacon of continuity. Her unwavering efforts have ensured that our media services remain uninterrupted, providing our students with the best resources. Mrs. Hesler goes Above and Beyond, whether helping teachers with resources for units of study, running our school news team, or planning for our school community meetings (I could go on). Mrs. Hesler, a Pike graduate and proud Pike parent, has shared her talents with New Augusta South for twenty years. I am honored to nominate her for the prestigious Superintendent’s Above and Beyond Award." Winter Break This year, winter break will take place from Friday, December 20th - Friday, January 3rd. Students' last day of school for the semester will be Thursday, December 19th. School will resume on Monday, January 6th. Colts Go the Extra Mile The Indianapolis Colts organization has been an amazing partner to our district. In September, they visited Eastbrook Elementary School for their School Uniform Blitz, providing students with uniforms, hygiene kits, water bottles, tote bags, socks, books, and more. Students also had the chance to meet Colts players and cheerleaders. However, amidst the excitement, EES Counselor Chayzee Smith and Kristin Ballard, wife of the Colts' general manager, noticed a second-grader upset because he’d missed meeting his favorite player. Kristin quickly arranged for Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson to sign the student's jersey. Touched by the student's dedication, Richardson added a personal message. When the signed jersey was presented in class, it created a moment of excitement and inspiration for everyone. Mr. Smith shared that the student recorded a special message thanking Anthony Richardson for the signed jersey and his support. "This heartwarming act of kindness from the Colts has truly made a lasting impact...It’s a perfect example of how small gestures can make a world of difference in a child’s life and motivate them to keep striving for their best. I’m so grateful to the Indianapolis Colts, Kristin Ballard, and Ande Sadtler for helping turn disappointment into one of the most memorable moments of his young life." Courtesy of Chayzee Smith Pike Red Zone Food Pantry Our Pike Red Zone Food Pantry will hold a distribution on Monday, December 16th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Pike Freshman Center. Pike Well Represented at Butler Jazz Festival Congratulations to Pike High School's Jazz 1 on their tremendous performance at the Butler Jazz Festival, where Sawyer Anderson, Abby Barnett, and Anthony Broaddus received Outstanding Musicianship Awards. Courtesy of Aaron Burkhart PTEF Honor Roll The Pike Township Educational Foundation invites you to honor your favorite educator by putting them on the PTEF Honor Roll. Donate $5 or more and your honoree will receive a small gift and a note with your message. Your donation will benefit the PTEF's grant and scholarship programs. If you would like for the individual you nominate to receive their notification prior to winter break, please submit your nomination before December 18th.
