ECS Highlights (Mar. 7th)
Speech Students To State After a great season for the Elkhart High School Speech & Debate team, two of its students are headed to state this Saturday, March 8th. Ian Kelly and Myles Aipira both compete in the category of Radio Broadcasting. We wish them both luck, and thank them for continuing to exemplify the Excellence In Elkhart our students achieve in all areas of academics. Making The All-Honor Choir Four students in ECS middle schools have earned a spot in the Indiana All-Honor Choir. This ensemble gathers some of the top middle school singers from across the state to perform as one. Congratulations to Malsawm Tluangi and Sophya Morales Velasquez of North Side Middle School, as well as Maliyah Harris and Grace Cantwell at West Side Middle School! Lessons With Landscapes A hands-on lesson at Mary Daly Elementary helped Mrs. Genovese's 2nd grade class learn more about the natural world. Each student was tasked with making their own "landforms" out of paper, including mountains, hills, and plains. They then poured water over their creations, illustrating how water flows in nature. This was a great, immersive way to cover an important STEM topic. Athletic Academic Achievement Congratulations to Aubrie Fruth, a senior on the Elkhart High School gymnastics team, who made the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association's Academic All State team! She is one of 15 students across Indiana to qualify. This comes as the EHS gymnastics team prepares for regional competition this weekend. At sectionals, they set a new school record for highest overall team score at one meet. Upcoming Events Mar. 8 - Gymnastics Regionals Mar. 8 - Speech State Competition Mar. 14 - 16: 9 to 5 Musical (EHS) Mar. 25 - Boys Volleyball Season opener

ECS Highlights (Feb. 7th)
Preparing 8th Graders For High School This week, the Elkhart High School Freshman Division began welcoming students from our middle schools for high school preparation tours. Students had the chance to tour the building, as well as speak to representatives from several EHS clubs. This is ahead of our incoming freshman family informational night happening Wednesday, February 19, at the Freshman Division. Exploring Our Local Libraries Over the next few weeks, elementary students district-wide will take field trips to the Elkhart Public Library. A group from Mary Daly was there earlier this week, where they had the opportunity to learn about library operations, as well as check out a book of their own. We appreciate the Elkhart Public Library, an amazing community partner that helps promote a love of reading in our students! Bowler Heading To State Another Elkhart High School athlete has qualified for state competition! Wyatt Skipper, a member of the EHS Bowling team, earned a runner-up placing at the recent bowling semi-state competition. That allows him to compete for the state title later this month. Good luck Wyatt - we know that you will represent the Excellence of Elkhart Athletics well! A Historic Photography Lesson While much of their coursework has to do with digital cameras, photography students at the Elkhart Area Career Center recently learned the how to do the "wet-plate" method, one of the oldest forms of photography. This involved using antique cameras, pouring their own plates, and learning how to properly develop photos in this style. Upcoming Events Feb. 12: Band and Orchestra 5th/6th Grade Instrument Night Feb. 14 - 17: Presidents' Recess (ALL SCHOOLS CLOSED) Feb. 19: Incoming Freshmen Family Night Feb. 22: Winter Guard Contest

Recruiting The Next Generation Of Musicians This week, choir, orchestra, and band students at West Side Middle School held a recruitment concert for 5th and 6th graders who will attend West Side in the next school year. Each ensemble performed excellently, and their directors had the opportunity to speak about why WSMS's music program is so special. This was a great way to get these younger students excited for middle school! Gymnastic Excellence At EHS Our Elkhart High School gymnastics team is off to an excellent start this season, with multiple high ranks earned at team and individual levels. At the recent East/West Invitational (where the team took home the overall win), Maya Betancourt broke the EHS record for the highest ever score on a floor routine, with a 9.9. That record had been in place since 2011! Learning About Public Safety Bristol Elementary School gave students the opportunity to get to know one of the people working to keep their community safe. Engaging STEM Lessons Students at North Side Middle School are diving into dynamic, hands-on STEM activities. This week, they worked with Sphero kits, which challenge students to pilot robotic spheres to specific locations. The project taught students about coding, programming, and robotics operations. A Tradition Of Friendly Competition At the recent Elkhart High School vs. Penn basketball game, each school's athletic club faced off in a friendly competition during halftime.
