Around Finley Schools February 2025 Levy Update Thank you for exercising your right to vote. Being a part of the democratic process and sharing your voice through voting is your civic responsibility. Our students need your participation as our community grows together. We anxiously await the final results of the levy propositions on Friday, February 21st. Great schools make great communities! - Bryan Long, Superintendent Athletics Update RVHS Panthers Update The boys and girls basketball season have come to an end. The girls team qualified for the EWAC tournament and ended up losing a hard-fought game in Goldendale. We had our Senior Night on January 30 where we recognized Hyatt Clark , Hunter Bronson , Hunter DeLavega , Jovanny Jaramillo , and Kyia Miles from the basketball teams. We also recognized Helyn Brown , Mackenzie Mills , and Maria Anaya from Winter Cheer, and Arlin Ramirez , Lyndee Pevey and Vahn Burnett from Pep Band. The boys and girls wrestling teams are currently in the post season, and at last weekend’s EWAC League Tournament, Landon Los and Griselda Meraz finished 2nd. Overall, we qualified 8 boys and 6 girls to the District 5 tournament at Highland and Granger. State wrestling at the Tacoma Dome is February 21 and 22. RVHS spring sports begin March 3. FMS Falcons Update The girls basketball season is about at its half-way point. We have an 8th and 7th grade team, coached by Matt Smith and Rob Hayfield. The 8th grade team is 3-1, while the 7th grade team is 0-4. The season concludes February 27. FMS Spring Sports begin March 24. Finley Elementary School Bike Program In case you missed it, 3rd-5th grades in Mrs. Williamson's PE class wrapped up their unit on bike safety last month. Thanks to the Let’s Go program, coordinated by ESD 123, these kids started learning biking & road safety skills before winter break. Read more about the program here! Family Learning Fair Thank you to everyone who contributed and all the families who joined us for another successful Family Learning Fair at Finley Elementary! Our gym was filled with great organizations sharing important information and resources with families. Finley Middle School 7th graders took a field trip to the REACH Museum. The FMS Destination Imagination Group dropped off pet supplies from their drive at the Benton-Franklin Humane Society! Winter Band & Choir Concert RVHS and FMS Band and Choir performed their first concert of the year on February 6th. River View High School FCCLA Week (Feb. 10-14) Last week was Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Week, showcasing what FCCLA is and all that members have accomplished! At RVHS we celebrated by wearing red, playing Kahoots, making friendship bracelets, and enjoying Italian sodas! FCCLA members also visited a nursing home on Thursday to give back to the community. FFA Week (Feb. 15-26) This National FFA Week, the Finley FFA Chapter has a lot going on! Tuesday - Dress Up: Farm Animal Day Wednesday - Dress Up: Anything BUT a Backpack (Ag Edition) Dips & Donuts for members at 7:30 AM in Mrs. Yochum's room Discovery & Greenhand Ceremony at 6 PM in Mrs. Yochum's room Thursday - Dress Up: Color Wars - Blue vs. Gold Seniors & Sophomores - Blue Juniors/Freshmen - Yellow Staff - 1/2 & 1/2 Middle School - Blue or Gold Gratitude Day : RVHS & FMS staff are invited to breakfast from the FFA starting at 7 AM in the high school staff lunch room Friday - Dress Up: Professional Dress / Business Attire Day Lower Columbia Basin FFA Jamboree at RVHS all day - we're hosting schools from across our region and are expecting one of the National FFA Officers, Luke Jennings, to visit from Ohio! There will be prizes for the best dressed at the high school during lunch, so be sure to dress up and listen for the announcements! Mark It On Your Calendar! Around Finley Schools January 2025 Thank you to our Finley School District Board of Directors! January is School Board appreciation month, so be sure to take the opportunity to show your appreciation for the dedicated members of the Finley School Board: Cathy Krug , Jayme Finch , Tom LaFortune , Laramie Holden , and McKenzie Kennedy-Slatick . Thank you for all you do! Congratulations to Ladonna Olson & Stephanie Vasquez! Ladonna Olson, Head Cook at Finley Elementary School, and Stephanie Vasquez, Building Secretary at Finley Middle School, received crystal apples from the PSE Union in recognition of their service and dedication to the students and staff at Finley School District. Mrs. Olson is the union vice-president and has been with Finley School District since 2018. Mrs. Vasquez is a former union president and has been with the district since 2004. Congratulations! Athletics Update Panther Wrestlers RVHS Panthers Update Panther wrestling is in the last weeks of the regular season. RVHS boys' and girls' wrestling are busy attending tournaments and hosting League matches. Coaches Rick Mclaughlin and Dempsi Talkington have taken the wrestlers across the state to different competitions. The team celebrated their seniors, Eli Mendoza and Mackenzie Chavez , on senior night. The EWAC League tournament is February 7 and 8 in Warden. Panther boys' and girls' basketball are busy playing divisional opponents. The boys sit at 0-3 in EWAC east division, while the girl’s sit at 1-2. This weekend we play at Tri-Cities Prep and Columbia-Burbank. We'll celebrate our seniors on Thursday, January 30. The EWAC tournament begins February 3 and finishes February 8 at Lasalle High School. Over winter break, we celebrated two Hall of Fame inductions. First, we inducted 2024 grad, Cody Brown , for his accomplishments on the track and football fields. Cody was a WIAA state champion discus thrower and an all-league and all state football player. Second, we inducted the 2024 Varsity Baseball team for their WIAA state championship appearance. Brian Eisenbarth’s team finished 2nd in the state last season. Cody Brown Hall of Fame Induction FMS Falcons Update The Falcon boys' basketball team’s season ended prior to winter break. The 8th grade boys team, coached by Rob Hayfield, finished the season with a 4-6 record. The 7th grade team, coached by Matt Smith, finished with a 5-5 record. The Falcon girls' basketball team has begun practicing this week with their first game on January 23. 2024 Varsity Baseball Team Hall of Fame Induction Finley Elementary School Books for Bikes Winners! THANK YOU to the Kennewick Masonic Lodge for the bikes for our "Books for Bikes" winners! Our winners were Lillyana Pentecost from 2nd grade and Hunter Langley from Kindergarten. Salmon Eggs at FES Finley Elementary School received a delivery of 100 Chinook salmon eggs this month from the Benton Conservation District! Students will get to observe as the eggs hatch, learn about salmon lifecycles and habitats, and finally release them back to the river once they're grown. Finley Middle School 7th Grade WA State History Project Night 7th grade students finished up their WA State History projects with a night sharing them with their families. Destination Imagination Group Part of the expectations for Destination Imagination is to do a service learning project. Our group chose to collect food and other items for the Benton-Franklin Humane Society. Monthly Donuts with Parents We continue to celebrate our students who meet one or more of the Falcon Traits of Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Always Do Your Best with the Finley's Finest Caught in the Act awards during our monthly donuts with parents events. River View High School RVHS Reality Fair RVHS seniors participated in this year's Financial Reality Fair on January 9, taking on assigned jobs and incomes to experience hands-on how to manage a budget while making purchases, calculating expenses, and all the related tasks of "real life". A big thanks to the community volunteers who ran the different tables, giving students a chance to account for those things that happen in life from childcare costs to a table called Life Happens. FCCLA Updates FCCLA Competition On January 10th, 2025, Region 8 FCCLA hosted a highly successful Competitive STAR Events day, showcasing the hard work, talent, and leadership of students across our region. 141 students from 13 schools participated in this year’s event as competitors and support for the event. Congratulations to Makenzie Chavez, Makenzie Mills, and Victoria Marshall for earning a GOLD placing at these FCCLA STAR events and advancing on to the state competition in March. These results highlight the incredible dedication and effort of the competing students and their advisors. The supportive roles played by student volunteers were equally critical, ensuring the event ran smoothly and professionally. Read more about the competition on the RVHS website here . Around Finley Schools December 2024 The replacement EP&O Levy will pay for: athletics, extracurriculars, activities, and clubs, staffing, maintenance & operations, curriculum & books, and more! Capital Levy will pay for: Wi-Fi access points, replacement Chromebooks for students and laptops for staff, security cameras & systems, and more! 2025 Finley Levies: EP&O Levy & Capital Improvements Levy Finley School District is proposing a replacement Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy and a Capital Levy for Safety, Security, and Educational Technology Improvements to be placed on the February 11, 2025, Special Election ballot . If approved, the proposed levies would be collected in 2026 and 2027. Both measures will impact students and staff across all Finley schools and grade levels. The EP&O Levy is used to pay for learning supports, services, and programs , including staff salaries, athletics, extracurricular programs, technology, curriculum and supplies, and more. The Capital Levy is requested to meet additional needs for replacing safety, security, and educational technology investments, including wi-fi access points, security cameras and systems, and student Chromebooks. Athletics Update RVHS Panthers Update Panther Varsity Football finished the regular season with an overall record of 1-9 and a division record of 1-3. We finished the season losing 8-56 to the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions on Nov. 8. Hyatt Clark and Wyatt Curtis earned 1st team all-league honors, while Justin Smith , Drake Zunker , and Maddox Tyutyunnik earned 2nd team all league honors. Panther Varsity Volleyball finished the regular season with an overall record of 16-6 and a division record of 8-2. We were the #1 seed from the EWAC heading into the District 5 playoffs against the CW2B league, which was played Nov. 9 in Quincy. We began by beating Tonasket 3-0 and advancing to the championship game, which we eventually lost to Manson, 0-3. Up next was the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament in the Yakima SunDome Nov. 13 and 14. We were seeded 8th and began the tournament by beating Forks High School 3-0. Up next was a rematch against Manson, in which we lost 0-3. We finished the season by losing to Rainer High School 1-3. Overall, we went 1-2 at the state tournament. This is the 2nd year in a row the team qualified for the WIAA state tournament. Aliyah Malone was the EAST Division Player of the Year, while coach Allyson Stanley was the EAST Division Coach of the Year. Danika Koch earned 1st team all-league honors, while Victoria Sartain and Helyn Brown earned 2nd team all-league honors. Lily Holt earned honorable mention all-league. High school winter sports practices have begun and began contest the week of Dec. 2nd. FMS Falcons Update The Falcon boys’ basketball season is in full swing. The 8th and 7th grade teams are currently 2-3 with five games remaining. The Falcon Dance Team is dancing at half-time for the boys' basketball games. They shared how they are collecting food for the Humane Society of Benton and Franklin County. River View High School CDL Prep Class River View High School is excited to offer a new CDL Prep Class, dual-credited with Walla Walla Community College, for seniors next semester. Around Finley Schools November 2024 Inclement Weather Reminders Before we know it, winter weather will be here! When snow, icy roads, and other inclement weather make it necessary to delay or cancel school, Finley School District will utilize multiple communication methods to notify our students, parents, and staff of our operating status: Automated "robo" calls, texts, and emails (make sure your contact info is current in Skyward Family Access !) ParentSquare app Finley School District website ( www.finleysd.org ) Social media ( Facebook , Instagram ) FlashAlert Local media (TV, radio) Announcements of a delay or closure will be made by 6:00 AM. If there are no announcements, assume school is operating as usual. Athletics Update RVHS Panthers Update Panther Football finished the regular season with an overall record of 1-7 and a division record of 1-3. This put us as the #3 seed from the East Division for the EWAC League crossover game. We fell to Cle Elum 13-35, which meant we earned the #6 seed from the EWAC into the District 5 crossover games. We played but lost to the #2 seed, the Liberty Bell Mountain Lions from the CW2B league. Panther Volleyball finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-4, and a division record of 8-2. This put us as the #2 seed from the East Division for the EWAC tournament. We began by beating the La Salle Lightning 3-2, then traveling to Goldendale and upsetting the top seeded Timberwolves 3-2. This put us in the league championship game against Tri-Cities Prep, which we won 3-2. We are the first ever EWAC League volleyball champions! This made us the #1 seed from the EWAC heading into the District 5 playoffs against the CW2B league, which we won, and secured the team a spot in the WIAA state tournament in the Yakima SunDome on November 13 and 14. FMS Falcons Update The Falcon football team ended the regular season with an overall record of 1-4-1. The team ended the season on a high note beating Kiona-Benton City Middle School after tying them earlier in the season. The Falcon 8th grade volleyball team finished the season with a record of 3-6. After losing to Olds Middle School, 0-3, earlier in the season, the team ended the year by beating them 2-1. The Falcon 7th grade volleyball team finished the season with a record of 2-7. Their wins came against Columbia Middle School and Wahluke Middle School. Finley Elementary School Thanks to everyone who came to the Finley Elementary Fall Festival! Around Finley Schools October 2024 Happy National Principals Month! October is National Principals Month, and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the amazing principals who lead our Finley schools. Their dedication, passion, and commitment shape the educational experiences of our students and foster positive school cultures. Every day, our principals inspire teachers, staff, and students to achieve together. This month, join us in recognizing and thanking these remarkable leaders. Athletics Update RVHS Cheer Team at UW for cheer camp RVHS Panthers Update The high school football team finished up their non-conference game schedule with a 0-4 record. The team has been battling the injury bug, but most of these players were back for the beginning of our conference schedule. Friday, October 11 was our homecoming game against Tri-Cities Prep. Our next home game is Friday, October 25, which is our senior night. The high school volleyball team has also finished up their non-conference game schedule with a record of 3-2. The team competed in the Yakima SunDome tournament and the Ephrata tournament. The current league record is 2-2 with wins against Granger and Mabton and losses against Tri-Cities Prep and Warden. Senior night is October 22 versus Mabton. The cheer team went up to the University of Washington and participated in a cheer camp, as well as getting a chance to go to the football game. RVHS Volleyball Team at the Yakima SunDome Tournament FMS Falcons Update The middle school football team is at the mid-way point of their season. Their current record is 0-2-1. They had a great game against Ki-Be which ended in a 45-45 tie. They have three games remaining. The middle school volleyball team is also at the mid-way point of the season. Both 7th and 8th grade teams are 0-3 and have six games remaining. Finley Elementary School One School, One Book 2024 is here! We are doing One School, One Book again, and this year we're reading Judy Moody Was in a Mood ! All Finley Elementary families are invited to read along with us starting October 14th and culminating in a finishers' ice-cream and trivia party on October 25th. River View High School 2024 RVHS Career Day River View High School held our 4th annual Career Day for all high school students on Friday, October 11. A big THANK YOU to everyone who joined us as presenters— many of whom were RVHS alumni and/or Finley community members— to speak to students about different career fields. Around Finley Schools September 2024 Superintendent's Message The 2024-2025 school year has had a smooth start to begin the year. 879 total students and 131 staff have returned to the school district for education and participation in athletics, clubs, and activities. The new year always brings a new hope, an energized start, and a refocus on the right things of teaching academics, character, citizenship, and self-worth. The Finley community has a strong history of raising up excellent young learners proud of who they are and where they are from. Let’s embrace this school year with the same mindset. Remember your ‘why’ and the purpose of education. We work together to achieve together! Athletics Update RVHS Panthers Volleyball Camp RVHS Panthers Update After a busy summer, fall sports at River View High School and Finley Middle School are underway. Our high school football team, coached by Kris Welch, is led by seniors Hyatt Clark , Hunter Bronson , and Zack Benton . The program has a large number of players out, so we have a JV team also. Our high school volleyball team, coached by Allyson Stanley, is led by seniors Aliyah Malone and Helyn Brown . This program also has a large number of players out, so we have a JV team and a C team. Our high school cheer team, coached by Jenn Woodall, is led by seniors Maria Anaya and Helyn Brown . RVHS Panthers Football FMS Falcons Update Our Finley Middle School football and volleyball teams have begun practicing and will begin games soon. We have one football team and two volleyball teams. Around Finley Schools May 2024 Celebrating the 2023-2024 School Year The end of the school year is upon us, which also brings a time of celebration. Most importantly, 65 Finley graduates will cross the stage the first weekend of June. We are proud of your accomplishments, Class of '24! I would also like to recognize Steve Finley and Susan Schwartz as they leave for retirement. Both have given many years to the Finley School District and our students. You will be missed. Although this is our last newsletter this school year, please be watching for communication coming from ParentSquare that will announce important days and reminders as we get closer to the 2024-2025 school year. The district and staff will be working together to communicate a calendar very soon. Thank you for an incredible 2023-2024 school year! Athletics Update RVHS Panthers Update The baseball team was crowned the EWAC East League Champions with an overall record of 19-2 and a league record of 8-0. This is the second year in a row the team has been EWAC League Champions. We were the #1 seed going into the District 5 tournament, played for the district championship on May 10, and the team is WIAA Semifinals bound on May 24 in Ephrata. We celebrated our Seniors on Friday, May 3. The softball team finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-6 and a league record of 6-2. We secured the #2 seed into the district tournament and hosted Cle Elum on May 14. The District 5 tournament ended on May 17 at Kiwanis Park in Yakima against Granger. We celebrated our Seniors on Friday, May 3. The boys and girls track team just wrapped up another EWAC East League Championship. This is the third year in a row the boys and girls have been East League Champions. The District 5 Championships was in Cle Elum on May 15. We celebrated our Seniors on Friday, May 2. FMS Falcons Update The Finley Middle School spring sports teams are in full swing. We have one baseball team, as well as one fastpitch softball team. The baseball team currently has a record of 1-4, while the softball team has a record of 2-3. The season ends May 22. History in the Halls Student work from history class is decorating our hallways. River View High School Reality Fair On May 16, RVHS seniors dove into the world of post-graduation careers and monthly budgeting simulations. Thanks to Jennifer Ward, RVHS Family and Consumer Sciences/Financial Literacy Teacher, for organizing this event every year, to all the volunteers helping at each station, and to our partner WSECU Credit Union in Spokane for their support. FFA Updates WA State FFA Convention Congratulations to Finley FFA members, Shyann Kriewald, Kyia Miles, Taylor Russell, Soren Miles, Ava Teagle, Alexzandria Kellogg, and Makaia Gorman, for their outstanding achievements at the 94th Washington State FFA Convention, held at Washington State University in Pullman, WA, from May 9-12, 2024. The dedication, hard work, and passion exhibited by these individuals have earned commendation and recognition at the state level. Read more here. Finley FFA Awarded Grant for Student Transport Vehicle Finley FFA is proud to announce that the chapter has been awarded a generous grant of $40,000 from the Washington State FFA Foundation. This grant will enable Finley FFA to purchase a student transport vehicle, enhancing transportation for members to various FFA activities, competitions, and educational events. Read more here.
