Silverado High School Recognized as 2025 Model Continuation High School Silverado High School has been recognized as a 2025 Model Continuation High School by the California Department of Education (CDE)—a prestigious distinction awarded to only six continuation schools in Orange County and 74 across the state this year. This is not the first time Silverado has earned this honor, reflecting its ongoing commitment to student success. According to the CDE, schools earn this honor through a rigorous application process showcasing their commitment to flexible scheduling, innovative instructional strategies, and comprehensive counseling services designed to support students at risk of not graduating. As part of the evaluation, a visiting team observed Silverado’s student-centered approach, which prioritizes academic, social, and emotional support while equipping students with pathways for success—whether in higher education or the workforce. Silverado serves SVUSD students who have fallen behind on credits, offering alternative pathways to help them earn their diplomas. A team of parent volunteers has engaged students in art projects such as painting kindness rocks for around campus and making beaded snowflakes. Through a grant and focus on organic farming, Trabuco received a mobile cooking cart to utilize this year. The intention of each experience is to engage students in learning about organic farm-to-table practices and to give them opportunities to use organic produce in recipes that otherwise might not be familiar to them. Back in November, students repurposed pumpkins to create pumpkin waffles and enjoy freshly cut pumpkin slices. In December, students used locally grown fruits such as tangerines, pomegranates, and persimmons to make smoothies and muffins. Students learned about these organic fruits and the importance of using local resources responsibly. Olivewood Elementary Celebrates Creativity and Critical Thinking at STEAM Community Night Olivewood Elementary recently hosted a vibrant STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Community Night, bringing families together for an engaging evening of hands-on learning and fun. Parents, caregivers, and students participated in a variety of activities that combine creativity with critical thinking. Students built towers using different materials, testing their durability and learning about engineering principles. Another popular station challenged participants to hypothesize and experiment with objects to determine whether they would float or sink, sparking curiosity about buoyancy and density. Families also explored the artistic side of STEAM by creating intricate tessellations, blending geometry with creativity. Olivewood’s STEAM Night was not only a celebration of learning but also a testament to the school’s commitment to inspiring curiosity and innovation in students and their families. Santiago Elementary 6th Graders Host Inspiring AI Conference for 5th Graders Santiago STEAM Elementary 6th graders recently planned a Student AI Conference for the 5th grade class. Their problem statement read: “We need to throw an AI conference for Santiago 5th graders to educate them about the possibilities of AI because kids like us will be the future leaders in AI, and there’s more to AI than they think.” They designed informative and interactive sessions, crafted lanyards, prepared name badges, and assembled swag bags for attendees. Two former Santiago STEAM students were keynote speakers, highlighting how AI has already impacted their daily lives. Reflecting on Growth: Linda Vista Magnet’s Digital Portfolios in the IB PYP At Linda Vista Magnet, students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) are not only learning about the world around them but also about themselves as learners. One of the most powerful tools for this self-reflection is the digital portfolio, a key component of their educational journey. These digital portfolios offer a space for students to document their learning experiences, from classroom projects to personal achievements. As IB scholars, students engage in inquiry-based learning, and their portfolios become a collection of their thoughts, reflections, and progress throughout the year. Each piece of work included in the portfolio is an opportunity to reflect on how they approach challenges, solve problems, and grow in their understanding of the world. Beyond reflection, the digital portfolio serves as a memorial of their journey as IB learners. It allows students to track their development across the six transdisciplinary themes of the PYP framework, showcasing their growth in areas such as communication, critical thinking, and global citizenship. As students add entries—whether images, videos, or written reflections—they are able to look back on their learning milestones and celebrate the unique paths they’ve taken. For educators and families, the digital portfolio provides valuable insight into each student’s learning process, helping to foster a deeper connection to their academic and personal growth. Ultimately, these portfolios serve as a lasting record of the transformative educational experience that Linda Vista Magnet offers its IB students. MVHS Teacher Receives Prestigious Grant for STEM Education Mission Viejo High School teacher Alissa Beaman has been awarded an Inspired Teacher Grant from the Beckman Foundation through the Orange County Community Foundation. This significant grant will enhance hands-on STEM education for students. Alissa was honored at a grantee reception on January 23 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center, recognizing her outstanding grant proposal. With this funding, students will have access to advanced biotechnology equipment, allowing them to conduct real-world scientific investigations, such as using PCR and gel electrophoresis to analyze genetically modified foods. The Beckman Foundation and the Orange County Community Foundation continue to support innovative education, providing students with opportunities to explore biotechnology and develop critical thinking skills. January Attendance Tip: Set New Goals for the New Year The start of a new year is an ideal time to reflect on the achievements and challenges of the first half of the school year and to craft a renewed plan for growth and success. Encourage students to set specific academic and attendance goals to help them stay focused and motivated as they move forward. Take time to discuss areas where they can improve, such as arriving on time, staying engaged in class, or dedicating more time to studying for a challenging subject. Consistent attendance plays a crucial role in achieving these goals, as regular participation in school ensures students don’t miss out on valuable learning experiences. Remind students that being present not only supports academic success but also fosters positive habits that will serve them well beyond the classroom. By starting the year with clear goals and a renewed commitment to attendance, students can lay a strong foundation for the rest of the school year in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. Information About SVUSD Facility Focus Group As you may be aware, the Saddleback Valley Unified School District and school districts across the state are facing a decrease in student enrollment, brought about by fewer school-age students in California. The 10-year long-term enrollment projections continue to show declining enrollment throughout most of Orange County. Declining enrollment poses a significant challenge for SVUSD in maintaining schools at a sufficient operational size, continuing safety and security upgrades, and meeting the maintenance and repair needs for aging facilities that exceed available funding. Additionally, California law requires school districts to provide charter schools with facility space to accommodate in-district enrollment. Facing these challenges, SVUSD is reconvening the Facility Focus Group (FFG) to review elementary schools with a projected enrollment of under 400 students. The FFG was last convened in 2020 to present the Board of Education with solutions addressing operational and instructional challenges related to district facilities. This FFG will continue this process by reforming to include a parent/guardian representative of each school site with less than 400 students. Additional information on how to become involved in the FFG process will be shared in a separate communication to those families whose student(s) attend these identified schools: Del Cerro Elementary Del Lago Elementary Glen Yermo Elementary Linda Vista Magnet Elementary Olivewood Elementary San Joaquin Elementary Trabuco Elementary Thank you for your partnership as we continue to assess facility needs and explore solutions to ensure our students benefit from safe and innovative learning environments. Cielo Vista Elementary Builds Community Spirit Through Creative Scarecrow Contest During the month of November, Cielo Vista Elementary embraced the spirit of the districtwide Unified Scarecrow Contest by hosting a school-wide event that brought together staff, students, and families. The scarecrow contest was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get creative and work as a team. Together, the school developed a unique theme, built scarecrows, and proudly displayed them in the school courtyard "on watch" for all to see. As families and visitors arrived during Parent-Teacher Conference week, they were invited to cast their votes in several exciting categories: Funniest, Most Creative, Scariest, and Cutest. Principal Tyrone shared: “It was a joy to hear students excitedly share the stories behind their scarecrows, each one filled with laughter and pride as they recounted how they contributed to bringing their scarecrow to life.” Del Lago Shines with a Creative Science Fair and Heartfelt Thank-Yous for Local Heroes Del Lago recently hosted a vibrant science fair that celebrated curiosity, creativity, and inclusive learning! Through hands-on experiments and collaborative projects, students developed critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative skills. They confidently showcased their ideas and worked together in a supportive environment, proving that every voice matters. Adding to the spirit of community and gratitude, Del Lago students also wrote heartfelt thank-you cards for local heroes. Among those honored were SSgt Cain and RP Franklin, pictured proudly holding their cards.
