Whether your gifted child is in preschool, elementary, middle or high school, you will find information in these quarterly newsletters intended to help you support and prepare your gifted child for successful learning opportunities in our SUSD schools. So Much to Celebrate! National Board Certified Gifted Teachers Did you know that over 20% of our Gifted Specialists are National Board Certified?! The National Board Certification program is the pinnacle of professional development programs for U.S. classroom teachers and is the most significant way in which the nation’s teaching profession encourages the development, retention and recognition of accomplished teachers, with the goal of creating ongoing improvement in schools nationwide from the inside out. Those who achieve certification status report that going through the up-to-three-year process forever changes the way they think about their profession, profoundly impacting the way they teach students for the rest of their careers. We recently celebrated teachers who newly earned or renewed their National Board Certification: Ilalia Coborn, Sequoya Elementary (new) Jill Schadt, Redfield Elementary (renewed) Diana Bode, Hopi Elementary (renewed) Sheila Fullerton, Kiva Elementary (renewed) Alicia Majercin, Pueblo Elementary Brandy Wilson, Ingleside Middle School Kim Vallejo, Copper Ridge School Stephany Shamy, Laguna Elementary Nancy Cavenaugh, Redfield Elementary Presidential Award- Stephany Shamy Stephany Shamy, Gifted Specialist at Laguna Elementary School, was selected by the White House for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) from Arizona in the Mathematics award category. This achievement reflects Mrs. Shamy's significant contributions made to the teaching profession and in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She will receive her recognition at the White House, along with her $10,000 reward! Student Accolades High School Brick Shultz, senior at Saguaro High School, was awarded the Scottsdale Champion Student by the Scottsdale Charros, as well as Saguaro's Charros Student of the Year! Victoria Bourgeois-Conti from Arcadia High School, as well as Daniel Bucher and Iulia Musat from Chaparral High School are candidates for the prestigious 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars program. Additionally, 22 SUSD seniors are in the final stage of the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program! Middle School SUSD’s Annual Spelling Bee Champion is Laundry Bruyere, 6th grader at Ingleside Ms. Morfitt's Mathletes, from Desert Canyon Middle School, represented SUSD with pride in the regional Papago Chapter- placing 4th in the team competition, with one student earning 6th overall in the individual competition. Elementary School A 4th grade duo from DCES brought home 3rd place trophies from the CLTA AZ Chinese Mandarin Speech Contest held at Arizona State University. Additional Accomplishments Michelle Moreno Bilger, CGP Teacher at Tavan Elementary School was a recipient of the 2024-2025 Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers grants. She used the funds to improve the physical classroom for her gifted learners, which enhanced the learning environment so her second and third graders can thrive academically, emotionally and socially. Dr. Amanda Rand, Redfield Elementary Principal and I were selected to present at the Arizona Association for Gifted and Talented (AAGT) Annual Conference this past February. In our session, Embracing the Gifted Enigma: Collaborative Strategies for Bright Minds and Bold Leadership, we explored the unique behaviors of gifted students that are often misunderstood and well as emphasized the importance of collaborative strategies between district and school leadership to effectively support these bright, curious, and creative learners. We are passionate about bringing in various experts in the field of gifted to share and learn with our teachers and parents. We were fortunate to have Dr. DJ Graham present last night about the challenges gifted students face as they transition to middle school. His presentation made powerful connections using comic strips from Calvin and Hobbes, as well as strategies for supporting our students during this transformative stage in development. In February, Dr. Laura Wingers and Dr. Beth Richter, from Center Psychology held impactful sessions with staff members and parents around the challenges and opportunities of parenting and teaching young gifted learners, They shared shared strategies and supports for a "whole child" approach. Universal testing increases access across all populations of students, including those living in poverty and culturally diverse families. This year, 1st and 2nd grade students will participate in "blanket" testing between January 16-26, 2024. Parents do not need to register for this opportunity. SUSD Gifted Quarterly - Fall 2023
A Newsletter for SUSD's Gifted Community | Fall 2023 Welcome to the gifted community in Scottsdale! Please look for our parent newsletter each quarter. In these newsletters, we will share updates and information, recommend resources, and share invitations to events we schedule here in SUSD as well as other opportunities around the valley. Whether your gifted child is in preschool, elementary, middle or high school, you will find information in these quarterly newsletters intended to help you support and prepare your gifted child for successful learning opportunities in our SUSD schools. GIFTED UPDATES Greetings Parents & Caregivers of SUSD's Gifted Learners! We are off to a strong start, with much to look forward to! As we near completion of the first quarter of the school year, t his is a wonderful time to engage your child in some self-reflection- what do they perceive to be their greatest strengths and areas for growth thus far? When students can articulate how they have changed, when they can name the strategies they’ve used, talk about how they have grown–then we help them make that growth replicable the next time they face a challenge. The Gifted Advisory Committee formed last year- comprised of administrators, teachers, and parents – to review its current practices and services, and to guide the design, creation, and implementation of dynamic programming to best meet the diverse and unique academic and social emotional needs of our district’s gifted learners from Pre-K - 12th grade. Through a program evaluation process and feedback from the various stakeholder perspectives, the Gifted Advisory Committee identified 4 areas to prioritize and strengthen: Increased Communication Cluster Model Fidelity: PreK-5th Grades Professional Development: Administration, Teachers, Classified Staff Defining Honors/Gifted in Secondary We look forward to your continued partnership as we move these goals forward and improve services for SUSD’s gifted learners and those who support them. Smiles, Sarah Torrilhon, M.Ed, Director of Gifted and Accelerated Learning Fall Testing Results - Fall testing is now complete. Parents/Guardians will be notified via ParentSquare when the results are uploaded into ParentVue by the end of October. GIFTED SERVICES IN SUSD Gifted learners deserve: a safe and flexible learning environment learning experiences that are paced in response to a student’s individual need. recognition and development of the social and emotional aspects of giftedness Because every child is different, SUSD recognized that there is no “one perfect program” for teaching gifted students. Instead, and as the NAGC Pre-K-Grade 12 Gifted Programming Standards states, “a continuum of services must exist for gifted learners” at every level. What does this mean? Essentially, a “continuum of services” provides a menu of educational options that are respectful of individual student differences. In SUSD this range of services include: Accommodations in the regular classroom Schoolwide Cluster Grouping Model - Pre-K-5th grades, clustering at middle school Part-time assignment to both regular and special classes Content Replacement with Gifted Specialist- Accelerated Math/Integrated Reading; Honors, Advance Placement, etc. Full-time grouping with students of similar abilities Comprehensive Gifted Program at 3 elementary and 3 middle schools COMPREHENSIVE GIFTED PROGRAM The Comprehensive Gifted Program (CGP) is designed to provide unique educational opportunities to highly gifted, elementary and middle school students, who possess advanced intellectual, academic, talent or creative capabilities. Classroom instruction in CGP expands and accelerates traditional curriculum to accommodate the unique learning needs and interests of the highly gifted student. Students have a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum in the core content areas, working beyond the grade level with intellectual peers. Upcoming Tour Dates: CGP Tours Flyers Priority Applications for the 2024-2025 school year open on October 30th! AAGT Opportunity In the exhilarating, chaotic, and ultimately beautiful journey of parenting uniquely gifted children, finding our tribe – a community of parents and caregivers who share similar experiences – is nothing less than transformative. Embracing vulnerability opens the gates to establishing connections deeply rooted in empathy, understanding, and shared wisdom. In this community, we’re not just navigating the high seas of extraordinary potentials and unexpected challenges, but also anchoring each other through storms and clear skies alike. Together, we celebrate the mosaic of abilities our children bring into the world, fostering an environment where every quirk is a melody, every challenge a stepping stone, and every success a symphony. The conversations that sprout in such circles breathe life into our narratives, reminding us that we are not alone, and that the interweaving of our stories creates a tapestry of support, resilience, and boundless love. By leaning into this collective strength, we cultivate a space where our gifted children, in all their splendid uniqueness, can truly flourish. Trained SENG Community Group facilitators will guide you in safe, confidential conversations to address some of the unique issues, needs, and challenges faced by the parents and caregivers of our diverse gifted community. PARENT RESOURCES Talking with Your Child About Giftedness PDF Many parents and caregivers question how to talk with their high-ability children about giftedness or twice-exceptionality (2e), so it’s essential to feel comfortable in ways to broach the topic.
