Meet Austin Roach, a DevOps Engineer!
What teacher impacted you the most? Why?
My math teacher, Mrs. Hutchins. She worked so hard to give students every opportunity to succeed in a subject that many students would have otherwise hated. She would take time out of her daily life to offer free tutoring to struggling students who were willing to accept it. She was always kind, but also authoritative, and demanded the respect and attention of the class. She instilled the importance of being thorough, and also was an amazing example of work ethic.
What words of wisdom would you pass onto your childhood self?
Failure is the best opportunity to learn.
In what ways are you the same as your childhood self?
Fun-loving! I strive to be happy and have a good time with whatever I’m doing.
Do you have any pets? If so – what kind? What are their names?
I have a dog, Tohbi Ofi. He’s a Maltese-Poodle and he’s 16 years old! I have a backpack that I carry him in and we walk a nature trail together.
Favorite restaurant?
El Kanelo’s Mexican Restaurant. Myself and a few members of the Durant development staff used to eat here every Monday! The waiters eventually knew our orders by heart and would just confirm our ‘usual’ before bringing out those delicious fajitas.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Building on the previous question… El Kanelo’s fajitas! Although I could definitely settle for just fajitas in general.
What’s your favorite holiday & why?
Thanksgiving. I love the typical Thanksgiving foods and the time with family.
If you could time travel, where would you go & why?
I would time travel 100 years into the future. Hopefully this is a two-way trip and I can go back. I think it would be neat to see a future unreachable in our lifetime.
What are some small things that make your day better?
The ‘light-bulb’ moment when finally breaking through that bug or difficult problem. It’s a small thing, but man does it feel great when it finally clicks.
Favorite family tradition?
My Grandmother used to make a drink called wassail for Christmas every year. She wouldn’t ever tell us what all she put in it, but it was so good.
