Will Raines: Director of Engineering, CMS

Meet Will Raines, he is the Director of Engineering, CMS

Favorite family tradition?

Christmas Eve, Eve. The kids open new PJ’s, their favorite candy, popcorn and a movie. Then we sit down and all watch it together in our new PJs.

One thing you cannot live without?

Aside from my family… books. Reading is what I do to unwind.

What is the nerdiest thing you do in your free time?

When I have time I like to be the Game Master for my co-workers and their significant others for a session of Dungeons and Dragons. I enjoy the storytelling aspect of it, and I never know where the players will take the story.

What are you most likely doing on a Saturday afternoon?

Depends on the season but most Saturdays you can find me reading a book while my wife watches some form of sports on TV. Worst case it’s Hallmark movies if there are no sports on.

If you could magically gain one talent, what would it be?

Playing music by ear. I can read music and I play/played trumpet and bass guitar. I am always at a loss for people who can hear something and then translate it to an instrument.

What words of wisdom would you pass onto your childhood self?

The first thing would be “It is what it is”. There is nothing that can be done about something that has already been done. Learn from it and move on. The second thing would be that being a nerdy band geek is just great, if you look at the world, the nerds are in charge of the best stuff.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Pizza or cereal for sure.

Do you have any pets? If so – what kind? What are their names?

Two cats (brothers) named Cane and Abel plus a dog named punkin.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Smiling faces, coffee, and solving a problem.

What teacher impacted you the most? Why?

Middle School Band Director, when picking an instrument to play in sixth grade I wanted to play the flute like my sister, but he recommended I’d be a better fit for the trumpet. There is a certain level of attitude that comes from playing lead trumpet in a marching band that helped to build my confidence and let me learn how to be part of a team while being a standout and leading. You have to lead from the front, never from the back.
